Iceland's most epic reading school!

Melaskóli won the Epic Reading Challenge 2025 and earned the title of the country's most epic reading school for 2025!

Nearly 17,000 children in grades 1-7 from 90 schools across the country took part in the Epic Reading Challenge 2025. The reading totals are staggering: collectively, the children read for about 9.7 million minutes in one month, the equivalent of 161,539 hours. Schools from across the country of all sizes took part in the challenge. The smallest school had 6 students while the largest had more than 500 students.

Melaskóli emerged as the winner, with its students reading for a total of 929,962 minutes—the equivalent of 15,500 hours—during the period from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, 2025. That equals 15,500 hours of reading. Each student at Melaskóli read an average of 1,813 minutes over one month, or about 30 hours.

We are incredibly proud of our students! Melaskóli has a strong reading culture, and we have always focused on books and reading. Every day begins with pleasure reading, stories are read during snack time in all grades, and our library is a favorite spot for many.

It's always fun to win a competition, but sparking a child's interest in books and reading is an even more valuable reward that will serve our students for a lifetime.
